Prompt Engineering for Neurodivergent Minds

AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini can be incredibly powerful tools for neurodivergent people -but only if you know how to ask. This guide gives you ready-to-use prompts and strategies for common ND challenges.

Breaking Down Tasks

Executive dysfunction makes big tasks feel impossible. AI can break them down for you.

Try this prompt:
I need to [task]. I have ADHD and struggle with starting tasks. Break this into the smallest possible steps, starting with the very first physical action I need to take. Make each step take no more than 5 minutes.
Why it works:

Specifying "smallest possible steps" and "first physical action" forces the AI to go granular enough to actually overcome the initiation barrier. The 5-minute limit prevents any single step from feeling overwhelming.

Writing Emails and Messages

Getting tone right in written communication can be difficult, especially for autistic people or those with social anxiety.

Try this prompt:
I need to write an email to [person/role] about [topic]. I want it to sound [professional/friendly/firm/casual]. Here's what I want to say in plain terms: [your rough draft or bullet points]. Please write it and explain any social conventions you're using so I can learn them.
For tone checking:
Can you read this message and tell me how it might come across? Flag anything that could seem rude, too blunt, or confusing. Here's the message: [paste your message]

Social Situation Scripts

Preparing for social interactions reduces anxiety and masking fatigue.

Try this prompt:
I'm going to [social situation, e.g., a work networking event]. I'm autistic and find small talk difficult. Give me 5 conversation starters, 3 ways to gracefully exit a conversation, and 2 scripts for when I don't know what to say.

Summarizing and Simplifying

Long documents, legal text, and academic papers can be overwhelming for many neurodivergent people.

Try this prompt:
Summarize this in bullet points using simple, clear language. Highlight the 3 most important things I need to know and any actions I need to take. Use short sentences. Here's the text: [paste text]

Creating Routines

Building sustainable routines is one of the most impactful things AI can help with.

Try this prompt:
Help me create a morning routine. I have [condition]. My challenges are [list them, e.g., time blindness, low morning energy, forgetting steps]. I wake up at [time] and need to leave by [time]. Include realistic time estimates and build in buffer time. Be realistic about my energy, not idealistic.

Understanding Medical and Legal Documents

IEPs, accommodation letters, insurance documents, and medical records can be confusing and anxiety-inducing.

Try this prompt:
Explain this [document type] in plain language. What are my rights? What actions do I need to take, and by when? What are the most important sections? Here's the document: [paste text]

Emotional Regulation Support

When emotions feel overwhelming, AI can provide structured support without judgment.

Try this prompt:
I'm feeling [emotion] because [situation]. Can you help me think through this? Don't tell me to "just calm down." Instead: (1) validate what I'm feeling, (2) help me figure out what specifically triggered this, and (3) suggest one concrete thing I can do right now.
